Fisherman's Friend

In 1978, the famous Fisherman’s Friend lozenges were imported into Switzerland for the first time and distributed by Uhlmann Eyraud. The range now comprises 11 flavours, eight of which are sugar free.

The stage is set for Fisherman’s Friend

If they’re too strong, you’re too weak!

In 1865, Fleetwood, a town in Lancashire on the northwest coast of England, was the undisputed centre of the British fishing industry. From here, fishermen headed out into the rough and inhospitable North Sea in the North Atlantic. Freezing temperatures meant that many of them suffered from coughs, colds and bronchial diseases. The experienced Fleetwood pharmacist, James Lofthouse, developed a variety of treatments and remedies. Among them was an extremely strong tincture made from menthol and eucalyptus, which helped relieve the fishermen’s symptoms. However, the tincture’s containers often broke on the choppy seas, so Lofthouse pressed the liquid into lozenges. These quickly became popular among the local fishermen, who began referring to these miracle lozenges as their ‘friends’. And that’s how the lozenges got their famous name of ‘FISHERMAN’S FRIEND’.
